The Mahatma Gandhi statue has quite a backstory. It was crafted back in 1965 by an artist named Roy Choudhary, who studied at the Government College of Art and Crafts in Chennai. Imagine, it took almost a whole year to finish! And finally, on January 26, 1965, they unveiled it to the public. Pretty cool, right?
Now, this statue isn't just any statue. It's surrounded by these stunning white pillars, all the way from Gingee Fort, which is about 70 kilometers away. Standing at 13 feet tall, it's quite the sight, especially since it's right across from the Old Port Pier
And here's a fun fact: there's actually a tunnel underneath the statue that leads straight to Gingee Fort. Talk about history!
When you're there, you've got plenty to do. There are shops nearby selling all sorts of stuff, from cotton prints to handicrafts. And since you're so close to the beach, don't forget your beach gear! You might just feel like taking a dip in the ocean.
Pondicherry is great to visit any time of year, but if you want the best experience, aim for the winter months from October to March. And getting to the statue is a breeze—it's just 2 kilometers from the Pondicherry Bus Stand. If you're flying in, the airport's only 6.2 kilometers away, and the railway station's just 1.5 kilometers. Easy peasy!
